Opening the Patient Education Window

TIP: Open a Patient Education Slide Show from the Chart tab.

This is really effective; it enables you to show patients educational material relevant to their dental condition while you are examining or treating them:

To open the Patient Education Window
The Patient Education Window is a console for managing and running full-screen slide shows.
To play a slide show simply select it in the left pane and click the Play button.

There are two means of opening the Patient Education window:

  • Select File > Education:

  • If you have set up Patient Education on your Workspace Bar, click the Education icon:

To directly open a Patient Education Slide Show from the desktop
Requires that the Education icon has been set up on your workspace bar and slideshows have been configured.
Click the arrow to the side of the Education icon on the workspace bar to open a drop-down list of available slideshows, and click a slideshow to play it directly:

Creating a Slide Show Sequence

Requirements for creating new slideshows:

  • To create a slide show with new images you will need these images located in a location that is accessible from your computer.

  • Use the practice’s own slides and photographic images or source images elsewhere, such as via the Internet.

  • To be usable, images must be saved as JPEG (*.jpg), Bitmap (*.bmp) or GIF (*.gif).

  • Although you can browse for images from any accessible location, for convenient access, save the images in the \Bitmaps folder under the program directory on the Server or Workstation.

To create a Slide Show Sequence

  1. Select File > Education... to open the Patient Education window.

  2. From the Patient Education window, click the +1 button to open the Add Slide Show window:

  3. Type a suitable name for the Slide Show in the Name field.

Note that Slide Shows cannot be renamed; they have to be re-created with a different name.

  4. Click the Add Images button

to open your Windows browse dialog, and browse for slides that you require.

  5. Select images as follows:

    • Select an individual image by single click > Open button

    • Select multiple individual images using CTRL-Click of the images > Open button

    • Select a range / sequence by clicking the first image and SHIFT-Clicking the last in the range > Open button

  6. Use the ordering buttons to

    order your images as required.

  7. Click OK to save the new slide show and return to the Patient Education window.

  8. Back in the Patient Education window, locate and click your new slideshow where it is alphabetically listed:

  9. Check whether the slide show is set for timed display, or whether you need to advance slides manually, then Play the slideshow and check ordering of the slides.

To advance slides manually, use the arrows on your keyboard or press the spacebar to display clickable buttons.

  10. If required, select the Edit button to edit the slideshow (add, remove and re-order slides).

Running a Patient Education Slideshow

There are three ways to open the Viewer window:

  1. Select File > Education to open the Patient Education window and run slide shows from it.

  2. Click the Education icon on the workspace bar (if it has been configured) to open the Patient Education window and run slide shows from it:

  3. If the Education icon has been set up on your workspace bar and slideshows have been configured, click the arrow to the side of the icon and select a slide show from the drop-down list:

TIP: While in the patient chart you can see this Education icon and run slideshows as needed - this is an educational benefit for patients.

Slideshow Controls

The Slide Show is a separate application to EXACT, so it is possible for you to use EXACT while the slide show displays on a second monitor, such as a chair-side screen built into the dental chair so the patient can view the slide show.

To enable use of the second screen, check the Show slides on 2nd monitor checkbox in the Patient Education window.

Note that this setting applies for all users; it cannot be customised per user:

With the checkbox ticked, when the slide show runs, it checks to see if there is a second monitor attached, and if there is, it runs full screen on that monitor. If the box is not ticked or there is no second monitor it will run on the primary monitor.

You can run the slideshow automatically, with the slides advancing at a fixed interval, by ticking the Slide shows on a timer checkbox and setting the interval between slides by typing a numeral or using the selector buttons :

Once the slideshow has started you can control it by either mouse screen buttons or specific keyboard keys, as described below.

Mouse Controls
The mouse controls are active only for the first second or two that the first slide is displayed.

Thereafter you can re-display the mouse controls by either

  • Pressing the keyboard [Spacebar], or

  • Moving the mouse cursor to the top of the screen.

Keyboard Controls

If the mouse is stationary for a second or more the mouse controls will disappear and the keyboard controls will be enabled.

Note that Num Lock needs to be OFF to enable the keypad keys.
