IMPORTANT NOTES on System Requirements

Signature required:
Please request that your hardware supplier sign and return the Sign Off page (see "Client hardware supplier Sign Off" on page ) to Henry Schein One prior to your OASiS software installation date.
Henry Schein One will then prepare for the OASiS software installation on the understanding that the IT infrastructure is "OASiS-ready".

Specifications are for OASiS only - additional software may have additional requirements.
Please note the specifications in this System Requirements document only cover the requirements for OASiS and do not take into consideration any additional software you may require to run alongside OASiS. It is important that you consider the resource requirements for other software as additional to our suggested specifications.

Hardware setup deadline:
All of your hardware needs to be set up before the scheduled date/time for Henry Schein One to configure your OASIS software. Meeting this deadline ensures that:

  • Your installation runs smoothly.
  • Training starts on time.
  • There are no associated costs incurred by the practice for rescheduling the installation and/or training.

End of life / no longer supported
WINDOWS XP, VISTA AND SERVER 2003 ARE NO LONGER SUPPORTED!
In April 2014/2017 Microsoft stopped supporting these platforms. From July 2017 the following applies:

  • Henry Schein One no longer supports OASIS running on these platforms.

NOTICE: WINDOWS SERVER 2008 END OF LIFE
In January 2020 Microsoft stopped supporting Server 2008.
In January 2020 Microsoft stopped releasing security updates and patches for Windows 7
From January 2020 Henry Schein One no longer supports OASIS running on Server 2008.
Please refer to your IT services and/or the Support Desk for further guidance.

If you use the recommended SSDs (Solid State Drives), the OASIS database can be on the same physical drive as Windows and the program files on the OASIS server.
If you use HDDs (Hard Disk Drives), for effective system performance, the OASIS database should be on a separate physical drive to Windows and the program files on the OASIS server.

RAM and hard drive requirements: At least 2 GB of RAM needs to be available for OASIS. At least 50GB of hard drive space needs to be available for the OASIS database, to which you need to add anticipated X-Ray and document storage requirements.

Not officially supported, but may function:

  • STANDARD versions of Windows Server 2011 are not officially supported.
  • Macintosh computers running Windows Parallel session (either in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion, or installed directly) will probably run OASIS, but are not supported.
  • Virtual Machines (VMs) are not officially supported, but if you use VMs please be aware that:
  • The virtual machine itself needs to meet the required specifications, as well as the machine that the VM is running on.
  • You need to ensure that memory swapping between multiple VMs does not occur (for example, don't have a physical machine with only 4GB memory run two VMs each assigned 3GB of memory)
  • Even in the best circumstances you may notice slightly reduced OASIS performance on VMs.

Anchor
MoreThan30
MoreThan30
Not supported / conditionally supported:

  • Please consult with Henry Schein One when planning installations with more than 30 OASIS Licences.
  • Wireless devices are not approved or supported.
  • No Home edition of any operating system is supported.
  • Linux Operating Systems are not supported.
  • OASIS running over a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is not supported.
  • WAN configurations are only supported in Microsoft Remote Desktop Services.

Aim for more than the minimal requirements: Using the minimal system requirements could lead to performance issues on some systems.

Service Packs and critical updates: Please ensure that the latest service packs for all operating systems are installed. We cannot support operating systems that do not have all Service Packs and critical updates applied.

Screen resolution: OASIS minimum resolution is 1280 x 1024 (at lower resolutions the screen is truncated). However, some features and modules within OASIS require a widescreen monitor, for which we recommend screens capable of 1920 x 1080 and above.

Remote operation of OASIS Remote Desktop Services or Terminal Services.

EXAMINE Pro module:

  • The EXAMINE Pro module has specific advanced hardware requirements affecting both server and workstations. See Specific hardware requirements for EXAMINE Pro (on page )
  • EXAMINE Pro digital imaging software supports 64 bit operating systems, but you will need to check with your digital imaging hardware supplier whether your hardware has drivers for 64 bit operating systems.

SOE Link: Must be installed on the Oasis database server. The Oasis database server must have internet access.

Folder permissions for a network share:
OASIS needs to have a share called OASIS on the server. This share should be on the parent of the oasis\data folder.
All OASIS network users require full read/write access to this share.
The OASIS application requires full read/write and change access to this share, as well as full read/write access to their local OASiS folder.
The following are best turned ON: Network discovery, File and printer sharing, Public folder access.

Printers:

  • The dental practice is responsible for ensuring that the latest drivers are installed for the printer/s.
  • Printer drivers must be installed on all workstations that need to print.
  • Printers need to have unique names. If the same physical printer will be used for both A4 and A5 printing, two printer instances have to be configured, one for A4 and one for A5. The printer instances should be shared and clearly labelled so as to easily identify them. For example, HP_A4 and HP_A5.

Backup strategy:
The dental practice is responsible for arranging, configuring, maintaining and testing a backup strategy. Henry Schein One cannot be held responsible for any backup negligence on the part of the practice, nor is Henry Schein One responsible for ensuring that backup media are regularly checked for functional operation – this remains the responsibility of the dental practice or its associated IT services.

Network backup:
We strongly recommend that you complete a network backup on your server at the end of each day. You will need to configure your backup software to copy the network backup data and not your live data.
See also: OASIS network backups (on page )

AntiVirus
AntiVirus
Anti-Virus:
Henry Schein One cannot be held responsible for viruses on clients' systems or of data being lost due to malicious attacks from the Internet. We strongly recommend that you use virus protection software and if you are using broadband we recommend that you have a firewall installed.
If Live Anti-virus file scanning within a network causes performance issues it may be advisable to add an exception to the Anti-virus programme (this could dramatically improve performance).
Henry Schein One strongly recommends virus protection software to protect your system from the multitude of viruses on the Internet.
Please ensure that the following exceptions have been added to your Anti Virus on all computers using OASIS, including your server (Please note the following are the default install locations, including data location, for these files, if you have changed the default location please use those locations instead):

On 32 Bit Machines:
C:\OASiS*.*
C:\Program Files\SOE\Expro.exe (If you are using <examinepro>)

On 64 Bit Machines:
C:\OASiS*.*
C:\Program Files (x86)\SOE\Expro.exe (If you are using <examinepro>)
Anchor
exceptions
exceptions
Firewall Exceptions: UDP Port 6001 (If you are using <examinepro>)
Anti-Virus and Windows Firewall Exceptions:
Mimer TCP Port 1360
Oasis TCP Port 6696
SOE Link TCP Port 5050
HICAPS TCP Ports 11000 and 11001 and UDP Ports 11000 and 11001

Improve system performance:
System performance is affected by many variables. Besides the standard IT strategies you can

  • Base the hardware on recommended rather than minimum specifications.
  • Locate the OASIS database on a separate physical drive to the Windows operating system and the OASiS program files on the OASIS server, unless you use SSDs (solid state drives).
  • Live Anti-virus file scanning frequently causes network performance issues. In this case add an exception to the Anti-virus programme.
  • Use a 1Gigabit per second network where every component of the network can handle 1Gb throughput. See Network speed
    Anchor
    H_33240
    H_33240
(on page ) for more details.
  • Use SSDs (solid state drives) on servers, with 20% fault recovery.
  • Use a graphics card with hardware acceleration if using graphics intensively (such as with ExaminePro).

Remote Access Software:
Henry Schein One uses Bomgar (see "Remote Access Software - Bomgar " on page ) to remote-support clients via their broadband Internet connections.
Bomgar requires no software installed at the client end, but does require ports and exceptions configuration (see Ports and Exceptions (see "Bomgar ports and exceptions" on page ).

Checklist for choosing a Hardware Supplier

Henry Schein One is committed to assisting you and your hardware vendors in the installation of your hardware. Please contact your Regional Business Manager if you need any assistance.
As you will be relying on the computerised dental system to run your business, it pays to strategize how to maximize uptime and minimize downtime. One of the first steps in this strategy is to choose your hardware supplier very carefully.

Anchor
O_25115
O_25115

Key points to consider before contracting a hardware supplier:

Is there a service contract by means of which to correct any problems that may arise?

Should the system fail, what is the response time for an engineer to arrive on site?

Once the supplier has diagnosed where the fault lies, will they get it back up and running or just supply the parts?

If there is a problem with the operating system or if configuration changes are needed within the network, will the supplier correct these, or only support the physical hardware on the individual PCs?

If a computer fails and is removed from site, will the supplier replace it with a temporary machine?

Consider what will happen to the contract in the second and subsequent years. A warranty replacement arrangement is not enough. The contract will need to be extendable.

Does the contract warrant that the supplier will continue to support the system functionality rather than just supporting the system components?

O_25116

Will the supplier check the integrity of your backups on a regular basis?

Verification that your IT infrastructure conforms to at least the minimum requirements described in this document:

SSDs (Solid State Drives)

What is SSD?

SSD: Solid State Drive
HDD: Hard Disk Drive.
SSDs are faster than HDDs. They use flash memory to store data, which provides better performance than HDDs.
SSDs are more reliable than HDDs. The SSD has no moving parts whereas a HDD's moving parts and magnetic platters are prone to wear down and fail with prolonged usage.

Anchor

_Toc16664785
SSDs are now recommended for OASiS:
  • SSD for the system drive.
  • SSD for combined system + data drive.
  • Where data is written to a separate volume, a SSD is also recommended for the separate data drive.
Anchor

Possibility of Operating System (OS) and database on a single SSD:

Considering the typical sizes involved for our databases, and considering the characteristics of modern SSDs, there is little benefit in having the OS and database on separate drives. Any SSD larger than 200 GB will likely suffice in containing the entire OS and database.

RAID

Anchor
_Toc16664788
_Toc16664788
What is RAID?

RAID: Redundant Array of Independent Disks
Multiple disks are physically linked together to form a single logical, large capacity storage device (array), and this array is managed by a controller. When these multiple disks are accessed in parallel the system achieves greater throughput (better performance) than with a single disk.
Having redundant data on multiple disks allows greater fault tolerance than with a single disk (disk errors are managed and have less impact on system functionality).
RAID has such advantages over stand-alone disk storage devices that the RAID capability is being built into modern operating systems in anticipation of a lot more RAID uptake.

Anchor
_Toc16664789
_Toc16664789
Why RAID for OASiS?

Computerised systems need to maximise their disk performance and guard their data integrity. With OASiS this is especially important given OASiS' live customer-facing functionality and the sensitivity of the medical data stored on its disks. RAID has long been known as an effective technology for increasing the performance and reliability of data storage, but until recently it hasn't been a ubiquitous solution in small to mid-sized businesses.
This is changing...

  • Disk prices continue to drop,
  • SSD is becoming the norm, and SSD prices are no longer way greater than HDD,
  • RAID is increasingly integrated by default into operating systems.

So there is now little reason NOT TO use RAID in OASiS dental practices.

Anchor
_Toc16664790
_Toc16664790
RAID recommendations

RAID 1 is minimum.
This implies that 2 x SSDs are mirrored.
If one goes down, the other will continue to serve up the data.
There continues to be a slight risk is that if one disk gets corrupted, the corruption may propagate to the second drive, which is why we recommend RAID 5...
RAID 5 is our gold standard.
This requires at least 3 x SSDs that are striped with parity.
It allows for one disk to fail and the other 2 will continue to provide service.
The parity ensures that corruption is detected and dealt with.

Anchor
_Toc16664791
_Toc16664791
What provides this RAID?

Hardware:
If the server hardware already includes a RAID controller, use it.
Software:
In the case that there is no physical RAID controller, request that the IT staff set up Windows Storage Spaces.
Storage Spaces is a technology in Windows and Windows Server that enables you to virtualize storage by grouping industry-standard disks into storage pools, and then creating virtual disks called storage spaces from the available capacity in the storage pools.

Points to note on Printers:

  • The dental practice is responsible for ensuring that the latest drivers are installed for the printer/s.
  • Printer drivers need to be installed on all workstations that will need to print.
  • If all printers are already configured to work within Windows, the printing setup will take less time during the OASIS installation.
  • Generally, it is not required that the network printer is 'mapped' to a local LPT port and it is not recommended.
  • The printers spooling type should be set to RAW.
  • If the same printer is to be used for both A4 and A5 printing, multiple printers will need to be configured, one for A4 and one for A5. The printers should be shared and clearly labelled so as to easily identify them, e.g. HP_A4 and HP_A5.

Recommended Card printer settings
From our experience, we have seen that card printers require the following settings:

  • Paper Settings - Landscape
  • Paper size - Label 2.25 - 3.00
  • Copy Count - 1
  • Graphic Resolution - 200 DPI
  • Media - 3.5 ips
  • Paper output - Cutter Disabled
  • Print Density - 11
  • Metallic spooling - ON

Sample compatible printers and related devices
The following recommendations are only a selection of compatible devices. Due to the frequent market changes and model number changes the devices listed may no longer be available. Please refer to Henry Schein One if you wish to purchase hardware that is not listed.
(While Lexmark and Canon printers work within OASIS it has been seen that these are very slow across the network.)

System Configuration

Good practice:
The Operating System should be configured to allow the application to function and perform well.
Best practice is that the server name should not contain any spaces or start with a number (this is not be mandatory but it sometimes causes problems elsewhere). A good example of a server name is 'SERVER'.
When OASIS is installed on a Server, a share called OASIS must be created for the parent of the oasis\data folder.
Required:

  • OASIS reads from, and writes to, a network share on the server, so it is required that the application has full read, write and change access to the OASIS share on the server.
  • All network users must have read/write access to the share, and to their own local c:\oasis folder.
  • Windows - latest Service Pack as recommended by Microsoft
  • NTFS
  • Client Usernames and Passwords configured in User Manager

Supported Operating Systems

The list below outlines the versions of operating systems that we support along with the recommended service pack and file system.
NOTE: No Home edition of any operating system is officially supported by Henry Schein One.

End of life / no longer supported

Virtual Machine (VM) guidelines

Virtual Machines (VMs) are not officially supported but they are likely to function if you follow these guidelines:

  • The virtual machine itself AND the machine the VM runs on need to meet the required specifications.
  • You need to ensure that memory swapping between multiple VMs does not occur (for example, don't have a physical machine with only 4GB memory run two VMs each assigned 3GB of memory)
  • Even in the best circumstances you may notice slightly reduced OASIS performance on VMs.

Remote Access Software - Bomgar

Henry Schein One uses Bomgar software to support clients via their broadband Internet connections.
Bomgar software
Bomgar is a remote support solution that allows support technicians to remotely connect to end-user systems through firewalls from their computer or mobile devices. Bomgar users can conduct remote support sessions without passing session details through a third-party, keeping system and data access behind the customer's own firewall and security measures.
Bomgar is a web based application that requires no software installed at the client end.

Additional Software

Microsoft Office applications:
Although OASiS has its own Word Processor, we recommend the use of Microsoft Office 2003 or newer (including Office 2019) to view and create documents or to export reports and patient lists.
NOTE: OASiS does not support

Office 365.
Anti-virus software:
Henry Schein One strongly recommends virus protection software to protect your system from the multitude of viruses on the Internet.
Firewall:
You should ensure that if you are using broadband you have a firewall installed. Your hardware supplier can recommend which system should be employed to secure and protect your system.
IMPORTANT: Henry Schein One cannot be held responsible for viruses on client systems or for data being lost due to malicious attacks from the Internet.

...

Backups are an extremely important and integral part of any computerised system. It is essential that a practice have a practical and effective backup strategy.
Henry Schein One recommends that this strategy includes "off-site" backups (tapes, DVDs, USB drives). Please be aware that Henry Schein One cannot check backups or restore data from all backup devices.
If you choose to back up to tape or cartridge, Henry Schein One may not have a drive capable of reading these devices.
NOTE: It is the responsibility of the practice to configure, maintain and test a backup strategy. Your OASiS installer will assist with the setup of a backup process. This will have to be in consultation with your hardware supplier as the backup process should be scheduled using the Windows Scheduler. Henry Schein One cannot be held responsible for any negligence on the part of the practice.

Database Verification

OASiS primarily uses a Mimer SQL database to store OASiS database records. This database should be checked and verified on a daily basis to ensure there are no physical or logical problems with the database tables. The check/verification process also includes house-keeping to ensure optimal performance. Your OASiS installer will have created the verification process on your database server and this process needs to be either incorporated into the Windows Scheduler on your server

or added to your desktop as a daily process icon. The verification process is called "verifyfiles.bat". If you choose to run MSSQL, you will need to have your database administrator confirm that the MSSQL database is optimized in accordance with MSSQL database administration practices and that adequate backups are being made.

Network speed

Recommended network speed of 1 Gigabits per second:
We recommend that your network runs at 1 Gigabits per second speed.
If any network component cannot handle 1 Gigabits per second throughput, it will reduce network speed for associated devices and may cause performance problems for users.
If your network is slower than 1Gb:
On workstations where clients are doing less resource intensive tasks such as charting, slower network speeds should not see a performance hit. However performance problems will be noticeable when attempting more intensive operations such as generating reports.
General guide for acceptable performance:
Basic usage such as charting requires at least 100 Megabits per second network speeds.
Viewing images/xrays requires at least 200 Megabits per second network speeds.
Generating reports requires 1 Gigabits per second network speeds.

Recommended Network Configuration

This is the recommended network configuration, including internal IP ranges for devices.
The network should preferably use at least CAT5 cabling, which runs at up to 100Mbps, and we recommend the more recent CAT5e (enhanced), which can run at 1000Mbps.
IMPORTANT: Wireless networks and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are not approved or supported.

Specific hardware requirements for EXAMINE Pro

Please note these specific requirements if you intend installing EXAMINE Pro:

  • Windows 2000 is not supported.
  • Server RAM Requirement is minimum of 4Gb.
  • Workstation RAM Requirement is minimum of 4Gb.
  • If you are purchasing the XIOS Sensor or any other Xray equipment that uses the Sirona database the server should be installed with a minimum of 4 Gb RAM.
  • If you are using Trophy or Kodak branded equipment, there are a number of versions of the Kodak Imaging software shipped with these products. We have tested a number of these with EXAMINE pro and we currently support the following versions:

V6.1.7.0, V6.0.5.5, V6.3.7, V6.4.4.0, V6.8.2.0A, V6.8.4.1A, V6.8.6.0, V6.10.7.3A, V6.11.6.2A, V6.12.5.2B, V6.12.11.0A, V6.12.15.0A.
If you are unsure about what version you have or require for your equipment please discuss with your Sales contact.

  • Ideally, all X-ray/Imaging equipment should be configured and working with the manufacturer's software before Examine Pro is installed.
  • Digital Images can take significant storage space; we recommend that you purchase the largest drive available from your supplier to ensure you have enough space.
  • The intensive graphic usage may cause performance issues, in which case it will help to install a video card that supports hardware acceleration.
  • EXAMINE Pro digital imaging software supports 64 bit operating systems, however you will need to check with your digital imaging hardware supplier whether your hardware has the necessary drivers for 64 bit operating systems.

Installation Considerations

It is really important that all of your hardware is installed and configured by the time agreed with Henry Schein One.
This will ensure that your installation runs smoothly and that the training starts on time.
Failure to do so could result in your installation and training being rescheduled and associated costs could then be incurred by the practice.

Power requirements

Sufficient power should be available and in close proximity to each workstation and the server. Typically each workstation requires three or four power sockets, which should be protected by at least a surge protector.
It is recommended that at least the server is protected by an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). This will protect the system in the event of a spike in the power or a total power failure giving you time to safely shutdown, helping prevent data corruption.
Devices that will need power:

  • Computer
  • Monitor
  • Printer
  • Scanner
  • Router
  • Network Switches
  • Intra-Oral Camera
  • Jet Direct Print Server
  • All Xray Equipment
