Checklist for choosing a Hardware Supplier
Henry Schein One is committed to assisting you and your hardware vendors in the installation of your hardware. Please contact your Regional Business Manager if you need any assistance.
As you will be relying on the computerised dental system to run your business, it pays to strategize how to maximize uptime and minimize downtime. One of the first steps in this strategy is to choose your hardware supplier very carefully.
| Key points to consider before contracting a hardware supplier: |
Is there a service contract by means of which to correct any problems that may arise?
Should the system fail, what is the response time for an engineer to arrive on site?
Once the supplier has diagnosed where the fault lies, will they get it back up and running or just supply the parts?
If there is a problem with the operating system or if configuration changes are needed within the network, will the supplier correct these, or only support the physical hardware on the individual PCs?
If a computer fails and is removed from site, will the supplier replace it with a temporary machine?
Consider what will happen to the contract in the second and subsequent years. A warranty replacement arrangement is not enough. The contract will need to be extendable.
Does the contract warrant that the supplier will continue to support the system functionality rather than just supporting the system components?
| Will the supplier check the integrity of your backups on a regular basis? |
Verification that your IT infrastructure conforms to at least the minimum requirements described in this document:
Please pass this document on to your hardware supplier and request that they sign and return The Sign Off Page (see "Dental practice owner and IT hardware supplier Sign Off" on page ) to Henry Schein One before your OASIS software installation date.
Hardware Recommendations
This section outlines hardware that has been tested and/or approved by Henry Schein One.
Please note the following:
Devices not on the approved list are not guaranteed to work with OASIS.
Henry Schein One can test devices for you, but there will be a charge for any testing (please contact HS1 Support for current charges).
Please note that any courier charges related to the collection or delivery of your device will be for your account.
The recommendations below are for use with OASIS Version 12. Previous Windows-based versions of OASIS should operate successfully on the minimum specifications outlined in this document.

Important notes about Hardware requirements
Please ensure that the latest service packs for all operating systems are installed.
OASIS minimum resolution is 1280 x 1024 (at lower resolutions the screen is truncated). However, some features within OASIS work better with a Widescreen monitor, for which we recommend screens capable of 1920 x 1080 and above.
EXAMINE Pro digital imaging software supports 64 bit operating systems but you will need to check with your digital imaging hardware supplier whether your hardware has drivers for 64 bit operating systems.
Wireless devices are not approved or supported.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are not officially approved or supported.
No Home edition of any operating system is supported by Henry Schein One.
RAM and hard drive requirements: At least 2 GB of RAM needs to be available for OASIS. At least 50GB of hard drive space needs to be available for the OASIS database, to which you need to add anticipated X-Ray and document storage requirements.

SSDs (Solid State Drives)
What is SSD?
SSD: Solid State Drive
HDD: Hard Disk Drive.
SSDs are faster than HDDs. They use flash memory to store data, which provides better performance than HDDs.
SSDs are more reliable than HDDs. The SSD has no moving parts whereas a HDD's moving parts and magnetic platters are prone to wear down and fail with prolonged usage.
SSDs are now recommended for OASiS:
SSD for the system drive.
SSD for combined system + data drive.
Where data is written to a separate volume, a SSD is also recommended for the separate data drive.
Possibility of Operating System (OS) and database on a single SSD:
Considering the typical sizes involved for our databases, and considering the characteristics of modern SSDs, there is little benefit in having the OS and database on separate drives. Any SSD larger than 200 GB will likely suffice in containing the entire OS and database.
RAID
What is RAID?
RAID: Redundant Array of Independent Disks
Multiple disks are physically linked together to form a single logical, large capacity storage device (array), and this array is managed by a controller. When these multiple disks are accessed in parallel the system achieves greater throughput (better performance) than with a single disk.
Having redundant data on multiple disks allows greater fault tolerance than with a single disk (disk errors are managed and have less impact on system functionality).
RAID has such advantages over stand-alone disk storage devices that the RAID capability is being built into modern operating systems in anticipation of a lot more RAID uptake.
Why RAID for OASiS?
Computerised systems need to maximise their disk performance and guard their data integrity. With OASiS this is especially important given OASiS' live customer-facing functionality and the sensitivity of the medical data stored on its disks. RAID has long been known as an effective technology for increasing the performance and reliability of data storage, but until recently it hasn't been a ubiquitous solution in small to mid-sized businesses.
This is changing...
Disk prices continue to drop,
SSD is becoming the norm, and SSD prices are no longer way greater than HDD,
RAID is increasingly integrated by default into operating systems.
So there is now little reason NOT TO use RAID in OASiS dental practices.
RAID recommendations
RAID 1 is minimum.
This implies that 2 x SSDs are mirrored.
If one goes down, the other will continue to serve up the data.
There continues to be a slight risk is that if one disk gets corrupted, the corruption may propagate to the second drive, which is why we recommend RAID 5...
RAID 5 is our gold standard.
This requires at least 3 x SSDs that are striped with parity.
It allows for one disk to fail and the other 2 will continue to provide service.
The parity ensures that corruption is detected and dealt with.
What provides this RAID?
Hardware:
If the server hardware already includes a RAID controller, use it.
Software:
In the case that there is no physical RAID controller, request that the IT staff set up Windows Storage Spaces.
Storage Spaces is a technology in Windows and Windows Server that enables you to virtualize storage by grouping industry-standard disks into storage pools, and then creating virtual disks called storage spaces from the available capacity in the storage pools.

Printers
See also: Adding a printer {*}{_}http://portal.softwareofexcellence.com/video/adding-printer_*
Points to note on Printers:
The dental practice is responsible for ensuring that the latest drivers are installed for the printer/s.
Printer drivers need to be installed on all workstations that will need to print.
If all printers are already configured to work within Windows, the printing setup will take less time during the OASIS installation.
Generally, it is not required that the network printer is 'mapped' to a local LPT port and it is not recommended.
The printers spooling type should be set to RAW.
If the same printer is to be used for both A4 and A5 printing, multiple printers will need to be configured, one for A4 and one for A5. The printers should be shared and clearly labelled so as to easily identify them, e.g. HP_A4 and HP_A5.
Recommended Card printer settings
From our experience, we have seen that card printers require the following settings:
Paper Settings - Landscape
Paper size - Label 2.25 - 3.00
Copy Count - 1
Graphic Resolution - 200 DPI
Media - 3.5 ips
Paper output - Cutter Disabled
Print Density - 11
Metallic spooling - ON
Sample compatible printers and related devices
The following recommendations are only a selection of compatible devices. Due to the frequent market changes and model number changes the devices listed may no longer be available. Please refer to Henry Schein One if you wish to purchase hardware that is not listed.
(While Lexmark and Canon printers work within OASIS it has been seen that these are very slow across the network.)
